Glacier Bay propulsion motors are the result of over 14 years of research in advanced permanent magnet motor technology. They have been developed specifically for use in yacht propulsion and do not require a transmission or other gear reduction. Furthermore, they are available in a wide power range (20 hp - 800 hp) which eliminates the need to use multiple motors and controllers on a single shaft to obtain the high power required for larger vessels. The motors have a flat torque curve, developing the rated torque from startup to maximum RPM. With efficiencies reaching 98.9%, Glacier Bay motors are among the most energy efficient rotating machines in the world.
Of course, any brushless DC motor is only as good as the the electronic controller which powers it. All of our motors feature OSSA Powerlite® technology, an intelligent power management platform desiged to maximise efficiency and performance. We are one of the few motor manufacturers to also design and build our own motor controllers. Since 1999, Glacier Bay has developed advanced BLDC motor controllers for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Westinghouse, Northrop-Grumman, United Defense, Tecumseh Products and other high technology companies and governmental institutions. All Glacier Bay propulsion motor controllers use Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) to implement a space-vector commutation control strategy. Space-vector control represents the leading edge of motor control technology and has the advantage of maximizing motor torque and efficiency while minimizing acoustical noise.
Glacier Bay motor stators are hand-wound and individually tested before being 100% encapsulated in ceramic-epoxy. This encapsulation ensures that your motor will retain its high electrical integrity in every possible environment. This is just one of the differences in a motor that is designed from the ground up to be at sea.
Our propulsion motors and controllers have been carefully designed to seamlessly integrate with all the other components in your Glacier Bay diesel-electric propulsion system through the OSSA-CAN© communication network. Using our touch-screen displays and helm controls, you'll have detailed information and control capability available at your fingertips — anywhere on the vessel.
